    Access to drinking water worldwide

    It is now possible for anyone to have access to drinking water anywhere around the world, thanks to the easy to use BIO-SUN photovoltaic terminal, which produces drinking water by combining UV-C disinfection and solar power. This is a solution that international development agencies have been awaiting impatiently!

    Designed by BIO-UV in partnership with PHAESUNBIO-SUN is a patented concept first developed in November 2010.

    BIO-SUN makes it possible to supply drinking water to communities deprived of this resource, solely using solar power, a natural element.

    BIO-SUN contributes to economic development by making available a sustainable environment-friendly solution, providing rural populations in developing countries with access to pure healthy water, and also providing drinking water to remote sites anywhere in the world.

    The method is simple: fine filtering, a UV-C lamp and a solar panel.

    The user simply fills the tank with water [1] that needs to be disinfected. The water is then filtered and disinfected using ultraviolet light (UV-C). In a few seconds the water is made safe to drink to meet living needs.
    The dimensions are adapted according to the amount of sunshine and the type of use in the relevant areas.
    The UV-C reactor has been designed to have the capacity to treat the equivalent of 500 litres/hour with 400 J/m², which represents the required dose to make water drinkable in all developed countries.
    Since it is powered by photovoltaic panels, this terminal has been designed to function for 4 hours per day. It is therefore self-sufficient for approximately 3 days and every day can supply roughly one hundred people with 25 litres of water each, corresponding to the living needs defined by the WHO.

     

    Tank water supply

    Depending on the configuration in the field, the tank is filled:

    • Manually, using a plug and 20 litre containers because, in Africa particularly, it is women who carry the water
    • Via connection to the mains (1.5 bars minimum, 3 bars maximum).

    BIO-SUN is powered by solar energy and can operate self-sufficiently for 3 days, producing 6 cubic metres of water. The WHO defines the recommended living needs for drinking water at 25 litres per person per day.

    BIO-SUN delivers 2 cubic metres of drinking water per day, and meets the daily needs of 80 to 100 people.

    [1] the untreated water must not be highly polluted by sludge, or contain a very high quantity of residues such as pesticides and other elements such as heavy metals and/or organic matter.

     

    What maintenance does the BIO-SUN station require?

    The distribution networks providing BIO-UV and PHAESUN after-sales service will ensute that spare parts are available and labour will be provided at a reasonable price and distance for users.

    • Replacing the UV-C lamp (operating life: 1 year) is a simple operation
    • It is recommended to clean the zeolith filter regularly depending on the loss of flow rate (depending on the quality of untreated water that is put through the system)
    • Active carbon filters and sediment filters (optional) should be changed roughly every 3 months, depending on the same criteriaThe method is simple: fine filtering, a UV-C lamp and a solar panel.

    There are several types of advantages:

    • Environmental: carbon footprint, no fossil fuels
    • Social: improvement in health thanks to clean water, reasonable purchase price, better quality of life with an impact on rural exodus
    • Financial: production of drinking water at a reasonable cost, reduction of healthcare expenditure, local added value through creation of activity
    • Technical: self-sufficient water purification station, simple design, easy maintenance and low cost

    On a societal level, BIO-SUN makes the users responsible.

    In order to contribute to development of the local economy, especially in Africa and Asia, installation and maintenance are carried out by local companies, thereby empowering them.
    The terminal is manufactured using a plastic material that it is difficult to recycle for other purposes, unlike steel panels or sheets. The terminal must be installed on a masonry block foundation. There are 3 different possible types of installation:

    • Standalone solution: the solar panel is attached to the terminal by means of a pillar
    • Offset solution: the solar panel is fixed to a wall or roof, etc.
    • Existing local solution: the rear panel can be removed in order to integrate the terminal into a wall or other support (like an ATM).

    What are the applications for the BIO-SUN terminal?

    It can be installed anywhere in the world where there is a need for microbiological protection of drinking water for local populations to eliminate water-borne diseases and particularly in underprivileged urban areas (townships, etc...):

    • International development players working in Africa, Asia, South America, etc.
    • Zones with obsolete networks
    • Zones where water treatment infrastructures have not kept pace with the growth of distribution networks (population pressure caused by rapid urbanisation)
    • Rural zones that are not equipped with water treatment systems
    • Buildings where water quality has to undergo particularly close monitoring: dispensaries, field hospitals in emergency situations, etc.
