In view of the public health issues associated with making water safe to drink, BIO-UV offers a UV-C disinfection system that guarantees optimum water quality and makes it possible to meet the most stringent requirements for treatment of water destined for human consumption.

The ranges of BIO-UV devices designed for treatment of drinking water have obtained the ACS UV certificate issued by the "EUROFINS Expertises Environnementales" Laboratory (certified by the Ministry responsible for health in application of article R*.1321-50 of the French public health code). ACS-logo

This certification is issued in accordance with the provisions stipulated by the decree of 9 October 2012 concerning the conditions for commercialisation and use of reactors equipped with ultraviolet radiation lamps, used for treatment of water destined for human consumption.

These BIO-UV devices make it possible to disinfect untreated water (boreholes, intakes, etc.) and to guarantee compliance with the water bacteriological quality limits in accordance with the decree of 25/12/2003, prior to distribution via the municipal drinking water supply networks (AEP). (French acronym for drinking water supply). The water quality is maintained. The UV-C water treatment lamps carry out UV-C disinfection.

A range designed for drinking water production

The low pressure BIO-UV reactors have been developed to meet the stringent requirements for drinking water production. UV-C disinfection guarantees optimum water quality, prevents risks of legionellosis and provides ideal water treatment. Water upkeep is no longer a problem. 

They can also be used for pre-treatment, either to limit the use of oxidising biocides and therefore oxidation by-products, or to treat specific micro-organisms (in particular Cryptosporidium and Giardia).

THE PRINCIPLE
The sun emits invisible light: ultraviolet light. This natural phenomenon is reproduced inside the reactors in the BIO-UV Group’s product ranges using powerful lamps, the result of leading-edge technology, that emit UV-C rays.

At 254 nanometers, the optimum wavelength for destroying micro-organisms (viruses, bacteria, algae, yeasts, mould...including Legionella and Cryptosporidium), UV-C rays penetrate the heart of DNA and disturb the metabolism of cells until they are totally destroyed. All germs are thus desactivated and cannot reproduce.

That is why BIO-UV has designed ranges of UV reactors suitable for commercial pools and spas in order to reduce or eradicate these side effects.

 

THE EFFECTIVE DOSE
The reactors in the BIO-UV ranges are dimensioned according to the pump flow rate, as it is the combination of the contact time in the reactor and the power of the lamp(s) that will ensure that the necessary dose (expressed in millijoules per square centimeter or mJ/cm2) sufficient to kill 99.9% of the micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses, algae in suspension,…) is received.

Simplicity, safety and savings

Thanks to the UV-C technology, BIO-UV offers an effective, environment-friendly guaranteed solution without any chemical products, to make water originating from local resources (wells/boreholes/intakes) safe to drink. UV-C disinfection for drinking water has many advantages, in the same way as the UV-C treatment for swimming pools or any other application:

  • It is always simple to put into operation. It minimises handling of chlorine and surveillance. It is therefore particularly suitable for rural municipalities that have different types of water resources.
    The physical and chemical characteristics of the water are not modified: the original taste and smell of the water are preserved,  promoting the image of municipalities concerned to protect their environment.
  • No UV-C disinfection by-product harmful to human health is created during water disinfection.
    BIO-UV water treatment systems provide microorganisms eradication up to 99,99 %. UV-C disinfection is perfectly safe. Drinking water does not constitute a hazard (no risk of legionellosis, etc.).
  • Modest investment and economical to run. Water treatment is carried out in addition to existing filtering systems or use of chlorine.
